Sunrocket disaster

Jul 16, 2007 Published by Tony Primerano

I've been a happy Sunrocket customer for over 2 years. So when I started seeing blog posts that said they were going under I didn't worry too much. I figured the worst case would be a skeleton crew and poor support while they tried to sell us to Vonage or another provider. Acquiring new customers is expensive so other providers would be crazy not to jump in and do a deal.

We'll I'm not sure who was doing the dealing but instead of selling us they just shut the service off tonight. Can you imagine? 200,000 VOIP customers cut off. Calling (um surfing) around for new service.

I'm sure Vonage and ViaTalk have their phones ringing off the hook. I'm sorry I didn't find a new service last week when all the rumors were flying.

Now. I'm stuck with no phone for at least another 24 hours and I may never get my phone number back (which I have had for 9 years now).

On the bright side I still have the Sunrocket gizmo that I plan on using with my new service.

I am just blown away by how poorly managed this bankruptcy was. I can't think of a worse outcome for the employees, customers and the venture capitalist. They threw away millions by not selling the customers to a competitor.

Ceiling Fans in the summer

Jun 25, 2007 Published by Tony Primerano

I'm under the impression that ceiling fans in an air conditioned house in the summer will actually raise your cooling bill.

In all cases your taking hot air off the ceiling and mixing it with the cooler air below. Now instead of having 90 degree heat next to your 120 degree attic you are putting cooler air up there. This higher differential means that more heat is going to move from the attic to your living space.

So skip the fan and keep the heat on the ceiling where it belongs.

Also. I find that people obsess over the direction of their fan rotation but it makes almost no difference. "I'm pulling the cold air off the floor" they'll say. Yeah right. Your circulating the air in the room resulting in a fairly even temperature. Direction doesn't change the end result much. The only difference is if you want to feel the breeze.

Stealing Used Coffee Grounds

Apr 17, 2007 Published by Tony Primerano

With Earth Day approaching I figured I would share something I have been doing recently. A few times a day I goto all the coffee machines near my work cube and steal the used coffee grounds. I'm not really stealing them since they are heading for the trash. I'm rescuing them! They make good fertilizer and compost. I take about 1 lb of grounds home each day for composting and fertilizing. I use the Tupperware I brought my lunch to work in. You don't want to put them in anything that may spill in your car.

Recently we all received some Goody cans at work with various stuff in them. I think people have been throwing them out. :-( I've been snagging unwanted cans, filling them with coffee grounds and planting stuff in them. Every little bit helps. I need to take a picture of one of my creations and put it here. :-)

Small 2 Stroke/Cycle Bio-Diesel Engines?

Apr 7, 2007 Published by Tony Primerano

Wouldn't it be great if someone would build small 2 stroke diesel engines for chainsaws, leaf blowers and other yard tools? Sure vegetable oil is more expensive than gas but most people use these tools rarely and being spared the the pain and pollution caused by mixing oil and gas is well worth the extra cost.

I'm not sure if the high compression needed by diesel is impractical for engines of this size or if using bio-diesel as the crankcase lubricant no longer works for diesel but I would love to see someone try this out. Examples of 2 stroke diesels I have seen all have crankcase oil but would vegetable oil be a good enough lubricant to allow the standard approach where the oil/air mixture is drawn through the crankcase?
Just think of the pollution this will help eliminate. And there is no reason this couldn't be applied to larger engines. I love the power of 2 strokes but I always hated the blue smoke. :-(

SPAM Detection

Spam Detection

Have you noticed that in the past few months the spammers have figured out how to get spam past the email providers.

Apparently the spam classifiers can't pick up on the fact that the text of the spam is an image. Anyway.. until AOL, Yahoo and others figure out a solution here is a good way to determine if an email is spam.

Many mail programs allow you to setup filters and most of this spam does not actually have your email address in the To: line so setting up a filter is really easy

In yahoo I did the following

1st I created a new folder called not-me

Then in mail options I setup the following filter.

If...

To/CC does not contain " Your Email Address Here @yahoo.com"

Then...

Move message to not me folder

Now I get about 40 emails a day in my not me folder. Occasionally it will be a newsletter that I am subscribed to, that sends to me via a listserv emal address, but about 99% of the messages in this folder are spam.

I still get about 1 spam a day that is actually addressed to my email address but that's better than the 60 that arrived in my inbox daily before.
Unfortunately I can't really do this at work since 80% of my emails come from listservs. :-(

For AIM/AOL I read my email via Thunderbird and I have a similar filter setup. Outlook also has filtering capability but I don't think the AOL client or AOL/AIM web mail have filters. Someone please correct me on this. :-)
Wondering how to read your AIM/AOL mail via IMAP? All the details are here

Ban CRTs!

Dec 5, 2006 Published by Tony Primerano

I can't stand those computer bundles that include a monitor and printer. Its usually cheaper to buy the bundle than to purchase the computer separately so people buy it and they often have no need for another CRT and printer. I recently tried to give an unused CRT monitor to Goodwill but they only accepted monitors that were less than 2 years old. I felt bad about it, but I took this working monitor to my local recycling center for disposal.

My solution to this problem is simple. Ban all but high end CRTs in the US. LCD prices have dropped significantly in the past year and this main streaming of LCD monitors would hopefully help decrease the prices further. This would also create a demand for used CRTs for the die hard fans and for people who can't afford LCD monitors. Then I could easily find a good home for my used CRT and as this secondary CRT market ages the LCD technology will continue to improve and get cheaper so people will start moving away from CRTs before the existing supply is depleted.

Just think of the energy savings we'll have as the supply of CRTs dwindles and the benefits of reuse created by the used CRT market. Reuse and reduce are key here since CRTs don't recycle quite like an aluminum can. :-)

Why I’m glad Bush got 4 more years.

Nov 14, 2006 Published by Tony Primerano

If John Kerry had won the election in 2004, we would still be in Iraq and things would still be going bad. The republicans would be sitting on the sidelines saying “if Bush was still in office this wouldn’t be happening”. And then democrats would have lost seats in the Senate and House in the 2006 elections.

Instead, the democrats have taken control and Bush was given more time to solidify is place in history. It’s not going to be a good place.

Unlock that Equity!!!

Oct 28, 2006 Published by Tony Primerano

When people take out loans they get the Federal Truth in Lending paperwork..  do they read it or understand it?  I think people need a dose of truth before they step foot into the bank.   I understand that banks need to make money but I think some of the current advertising slogans have gotten out of hand.

My favorite is "unlock the equity in your home".  Oh no.  My money is in jail.  I gotta bail it out and... spend it.    After all it is my money!

This isn't really your money..  You borrowed it to buy your home.  So a better way to describe these loans is..

  • "The Postpone your retirement loan"
  • "The Pillage your nest egg loan"
  • "The give the house back loan.  Renter for life!"

Yeah.  I don't think the banks like those loans names.  People really like to look at equity as their money.   Mine mine mine!..  This is how the government is going to kill social security.  Eventually a large enough portion of the population will be dumb enough to say.  Don't put "MY" money in to social security.. I want it back, I can manage it myself and get better returns.

Some people can but the majority of the people will just spend it.   So much for retirement.  ;-)

Salmonella is no fun

Oct 10, 2006 Published by Tony Primerano

Ya.. I had the salmonella.. I'm not sure where I got it from but it was awful.

9/22 -- woke up feeling a bit odd. Decided to work from home
9/23 -- mild but constant stomach cramps.
9/24 -- more cramps and sudden high fever. I ended up in urgent care. I was rehydrated with an IV of saline and sent home
9/25 -- spent day curled up in a ball on the floor. Sent a "sample" in. Fever on and off. Started Cipro in PM
9/26 -- spent day curled up in a ball on the floor. Realized I was feeling even worse a few hours after Cipro
9/27 -- Still on floor. Called advice nurse and told to stop taking cipro. fever still on and off
9/28 -- feeling a little better. Still have fever on and off.
9/29 -- thought I was fine. went to work but felt dizzy most of day. Fever gone
9/30 -- mowed my overgrown yard. Still tired
10/1 -- Was out of town but my Dr. called to say I had salmonella.
10/2 -- Still out of town. Still not feeling right I'd say I was 80%
10/3 -- Started 3 day antibiotic
10/4 - 10/6 -- feeling better but tired. I usually run a mile in the morning but I didn't feel up to it.
10/7 - 10/10 -- feeling mostly better but I still haven't tried running and it seems that I get winded pretty easily. I want to be myself again already. :-(

So where did I get it? My county health department called me today to try to determine that. On 9/20 I was at the "The New New Internet Conference". I wonder if anyone else got sick. I also had some Giant brand rotisserie chicken on those days but no one else in my house got sick. Its a mystery to me.
